Он был записан в моей студии холодным январским вечером с помощью обычного диджейского набора — пара Technics SL 1200 и Pioneer CDJ. Я включил в микс кое-что из нового и классического техно — то, что мне нравится в данный момент.
Как ты придумал свой ник Don Williams?
Я начинал выступать под именем DON или DJ DON. В немецком языке этот акроним значит «человек без имени». До 1998 года мне казалось, что псевдоним неплохой. А потом, когда пришло время выпустить первую пластинку, я понял, что называть себя Доном все-таки странно. В итоге решил взять еще и фамилию — позаимствовал ее у парня, который сочинил саундтрек к «Звездным войнам».У меня тогда в комнате висел старенький постер «Звездных войн». На нем было написано имя — Джон Уилльямс, композитор. Так появился мой никнейм.
Расскажи про свой первый клубный опыт?
Лето 1995 года. Трехдневная вечеринка в заброшенном военном аэропорту. Там было множество помещений. В каждом играла определенная музыка — техно, джангл, хаус и даже габба с хардкором. В те дни это была типичная конфигурация для вечеринки в Восточном Берлине.
Посоветуй какое-нибудь новое место в Берлине?
О, это не так просто. Тебя ведь скорее всего интересуют вечеринки, верно? Я редко выбираюсь, так что, если какое-то место мне понравилось, я к нему прикипаю и начинаю ходить туда регулярно. Прозвучит, наверное, шаблонно, но с тех пор как я открыл для себя вечеринки ребят из Ostgut, так они мне и нравятся. Я говорю и про старый одноименный клуб на Ostbahnhof, и про Berghain/Panorama Bar, который пришел ему на смену. Мне все еще кажется, что в нашем городе это одно из самых захватывающих мест.
Чего ждать от тебя в 2014 году?
По личиным причинам я в последние годы не слишком много музыки выпускал. Но теперь опять вернулся в студию. Только что закончил ремикс для одного из своих любимых европейских техно-продюсеров Стефена Брауна — он выйдет на лейбле Tehnorama.
1. Can you tell us something about selection in your mix?
actually I just grabbed some new & some classic techno I like at the moment.
2. How and where it was recorded?
was recorded in my studio with some standard dj set up (1200 & cdj) during a very cold winter evening in late january.
3. Is there a story behind your alias Don Williams?
When started DJing I was just performing under the name DON or DJ DON, which is an acronym and had the meaning "the one without name" (if translated from German). This name was fine for the first years as I was only DJing in the local club scene, but in 1998 I was supposed to release my first production and thought it would be strange to put out the tracks just as DON or DJ DON. I needed a family name, because I never thought about using my real German name I desperately tried to find a good surname for the first name Don. I came up with a list of about 20 family names and was reviewing them again with a good friend of mine … we couldn't decide for one, they all sounded kind of cool, so I was a bit frustrated at that point and told my friend: "You know what, I am fed up with the search and will take the family name from the composer of the Star Wars soundtrack!" At that time a retro Star Wars movie poster was hanging in my room and showing the conductor's name John Williams. So the name Don Williams was created.
4. Do you remember your first clubbing experience? How it was?
Of course that was in the summer of '95 and it was a three day party on an old abandoned military airport, with a lot of shelters and halls. I was a very young teenager back then and a dancer who was just in love with the music. the event was really nice because there were many differents styles of music on the different location, so i could dance to jungle, techno, house and even some hardcore/gabber and the surrounding of the old air port had it's very own character, that was kinda of a typical setting for a east german techno party, and I totally loved it!
5. Can you suggest some new good places in Berlin to look for?
hmmm it's very hard for me to name any new good places in berlin, i guess you mean party places or clubs?! I actually don't go out that often, so if I really like a place very much I stick to it and go there frequently, I don't search for the latest hype or hip place ... so I think this might sound too obvious, but since it's i discovered the parties of the ostgut crew I always enjoyed them, that includes the old venue at the ostbahnhof as well as the current panorama bar & Berghain, I still think it's one of the most exciting places in our city.
6. What are you up for 2014?
I just finished a remix for one of my european techno heroes Stephen Brown, it will be released very soon on the french label Technorama. This remix marks a new start for my productivity in the studio, I wasn't that busy in recent years because of personal reasons, but for 2014 I planned definitely more time in the studio and hope to release some new original productions.
